Fonseca Port, 1955

Vintage Port
Unlabelled | Embossed capsule

The 1955 was the only year declared by Fonseca in the 50s. An underrated, indeed almost forgotten, vintage that deserves to be rediscovered.

Notes on the year
The year was marked by an excellent ripening season with hot weather in July and August meaning that the crop was perfectly mature towards the end of September. Most of the well known shippers declared 1955.

Tasting Note
Medium to deep red, with a remarkably youthful ruby edge. Incredible richness and almost young grapey fruit character. As it breathes it opens to reveal spicy mature dark fruit aromas. On the palate it fills the mouth with round, marzipan richness mixed with full chocolate flavour.

Martinez Vintage Port, 1955

Vintage Port
Labelled | Embossed capsule | Level In Neck

The 1955 Martinez Vintage Port has a "Deep red colour, clear centre, pale orange on the rim. A lovely nose of oranges and tobacco. Sweet entry, with the oranges - blood oranges - dominating the initial flavours. Lots of acidity giving the fruit plenty of support. The texture thickens in the mouth - great development, thick and flavourful. Excellent wine. Enormous aftertaste. Cedar wood, cranberries and with a lovely sweetness lasting all the way through the long length. Improved in the glass for the short time it remained in there! A superb wine and with plenty of life still to come; my port of the night.

Quinta do Noval, 1955

Vintage Port

"Red mahogany in colour, 30% opaque. Gentle on the nose, with a pleasant and mildly fruity smell. Modest entry, with modest levels of fruit and a gentle acidic structure. Aeration brings out more fruit. Warm and pleasant afrertaste, full of orange peel and with a lingering finish. 86/100. Was significantly better a day later when it had put on substantial weight." Taylor Fladgate, 1955

Vintage Port

Taylors 1955 Vintage Port.
Review
The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. Taylor’s own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port. In 1955 there was a heatwave at the end of April and early May.
