Krohn Port

In 1865 two Norwegian cousins founded Wiese & Krohn, a firm exporting salt cod to Portugal and returning with Port wine for import. Initially a small company, Wiese sold his share to his partner but remained working for the firm as a commercial agent in their home country, assisting while the business expanded its operations to include new European markets in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Since then, the company has been known as Krohn despite its official name remaining as Wiese & Krohn.

After Krohn’s death in 1903, the company passed to management by two employees – Gomes Figueiredo and Edmund Arnsby. Gomes later retired, passing his shares to Edmund who acquired two new partners: his brother Frederick and Edmundo Falcão Carniero, a long-time employee of the firm. Following Edmund’s death and his brother’s retirement decades later, the company passed into the hands of Carniero’s family but remained under its original Norwegian name.

Since its creation Krohn has built up an outstanding reputation for its old cask-aged Ports, particularly its Colheitas (single-harvest Tawny Ports), examples of which have been kept from as far back as the 19th Century. The company is also known for its Vintage Ports, from its flagship Douro property: Quinta do Retiro Novo.

Vintage Port - In Original Krohn Box as illustrated
*Library stock from Krohn Cellars*

These bottles have impeccable provenance having been held in Krohn's own cellars since bottling. They were imported by VWP in December 2016.

Tasting note: Outstanding!! Pale tawny fading to amber on the rim. The nose is complex and multi-dimensional, notes of wild herbs, plum and mocha, coffee, tobacco around around a warm core. The palate displays a smooth, silky texture and finishes with a burst of rich mellow flavour. The finish is long and elegant. A, finely constituted port that is drinking well now but with careful cellaring it will hold for a few years.
