2016 Port Vintage Report

The 2016 vintage port declaration came as no surprise given that the excellent 2015 vintage was passed over in favour of this vintage. The 2016 declaration is the first since the outstanding 2011 vintage and will inevitably draw comparisons. I have now had two tastings of the 2016, one in May and one in September. My overall impression is that the declaration is justified. The wines are lighter in body and at this stage in their evolution. Compared to the 2011 they are more nuanced and perhaps reflective of the winemaker’s skill and house style.

All of the major shippers declared the 2016. The yield is tiny as a cold and wet spring made for a tough start to the year. The very hot weather that followed hampered the ripening process as the vines shut down. The picking season was dry which meant that winemakers could pick the grapes at the optimum ripeness. Production release volumes are very small, for instance only 72 cases were released of the Nacional!

The reception for the 2016 vintage amongst critics has been very positive. James Suckling awarded the 2016 Taylor’s vintage port top marks (100 points). With most shippers such as Cockburn and Grahams scoring well into outstanding category. The ports although approachable in their youth, will be at their optimum between 2025 and 2060+. Prices are quite high for the premium brands due to small yields. However, there are some highly rated, lower cost wines from Skeffington, Burmester and Messias that represent an outstanding quality to price ratio.

In summary, this is a solid vintage declaration. Small production and high ratings make premium brands a solid investment that can be laid down for decades. Great value can be obtained searching out the lesser known producers. (TC – VWP)

A quite brilliant Graham’s, one of the ports of the vintage, with fantastically clear cut, leafy black berry and blackcurrant aromas, fabulous sweetness on the palate, but also lift and elegance. “I think this could be one of the best we’ve ever made” Paul Symington told us. “on a par with the ’63, ’70 and ‘94”. Seriously deep and resonant, with palate staining richness that moves from blackcurrant to plum, then to chocolate and cherry on an exceptionally long finish.

Niepoort Port, 2016

Bioma Vinha Velha, DOC Douro
** 95 Points- Wine Advocate **

This 2016 Vintage Port Wine from Dirk Niepoort has bucked the trend by not offering a 'Standard' 2016 Vintage Port. He has chosen to release a 2016 Niepoort Bioma Vinha Velha. This is his single vineyard release from his ancient and emblematic Pisca vineyard.

The Pisca vineyard has always played an important part in making Niepoort vintage port, and used to be blended entirely in. Most of the vines in Pisca (a field blend of the classic port varieties, and a few wild cards) exceed 80 years in age. All the components for the 2016 Bioma Vinha Velha Vintage Porto were trodden by foot in circular granite lagares at the Vale de Mendiz Port winery.

Quinta de la Rosa, 2016

Vintage Port, DOC Douro

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.

The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.

It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports.
