Colheita Single Harvest Port
Includes Taylor's gift box
Description and Reviews:
Taylor’s has an extensive and enviable library of very old Ports and each year they release a 50 year old Single Harvest Port which represents the cream of their aged reserves.
Often referred to as Colheitas, these single harvest Tawny ports are a far cry from vintage port with very slow and gentle ageing in oak casks creating ports of extreme aromatic complexity with delightfully mellow structure. And the 1970 Port vintage was of one outstanding quality - ideal growing conditions produced what is now a classic vintage - universally declared by all the major port houses.
Every year Taylor’s dip into their extensive cask-aged reserves to unveil an immense 50-year-old Port. Not to be confused with Vintage Ports (which are aged in bottle), these limited-edition Very Old Single Harvest Ports have been slowly matured in oak casks for five decades deep beneath Taylor’s lodges in Oporto. The result is the ultimate Tawny Port, offering incredible value for money when you consider how much a whisky of the same age would cost.
1971 was a cool vintage and Taylor’s picked the grapes incredibly late, in fact it was the latest harvest date since 1909. The acidity and attractive aromatics in the resulting wine made it a year fabulously suited to long term ageing in cask. Taylor’s Very Old Single Harvest 1971 – the eighth in this series – is yet another highly collectable expression. Silky and ethereal, it dances over the palate with delicate steps of black coffee, treacle, marzipan, fig jam, sultana, black pepper, orange oil and that combination of tobacco, moisture and wood you find in a cigar humidor. One of the most delicate and harmonious expressions in the series to date. Very few things have hit 50 and remained so youthful, except maybe Kylie. An incredible birthday or anniversary gift, this rare wine makes a phenomenal accompaniment to crème brûlée, cherry-laced tiffin, baklava, cheese and dried fruit, or roasted figs and ice cream sprinkled with pistachio crumbs.
Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine. Once opened colheita Port should be stored in a fridge and should be consumed within 3 months. Colheita Ports do not require decanting and are best served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C.
