Description and Reviews:
The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in records in 1715.
The history of Quinta do Noval is marked by the actions of visionaries:
António José da Silva, a merchant from Vila Nova de Gaia, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894 after it had been devastated by phylloxera. He restructured the property by replanting its vineyards.
Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, his son-in-law, was the author of a vast set of innovations, transforming the old narrow terraces into wider terraces, which are a distinctive feature of Noval, with its whitewashed stairs. These terraces allow for more efficient use of land and better sun exposure, and were considered revolutionary at the time.
Quinta do Noval gained its reputation with the declaration of the 1931 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port and the 1931 Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port, which are probably the Port Wines that caused the most sensation during the 20th century. That year, due to the global recession and the enormous production and distribution of the 1927 Vintage, most producers did not declare Vintage. The success achieved established Quinta do Noval among the big names in Vintage Port wine on the English and North American market, a leading position in terms of reputation, which it still maintains today.
