Best Fortified Wine - Decanter 08 Awards (Steven Spurrier)
From the very good 2001 vintage the Fonseca Panascal offers a deep purple/black color. Lovely plump, typically Fonseca, voluptuous. Delicious pungent jammy fruit - compote of cherry and black plum. Rich and creamy. Powerful, aromatic, rich fresh fruit nose. Nice touch of cedar. Again wonderfully plump, luscious jammy fruit coming through on the mouth. Fleshy, rich, rounded. A hint of liquorice. Great, yet smooth, tannins. Good volume and balance. Nice long, succulent, lingering finish.

"Dried plums, black tea, dried fig, spicy and orange aromas lead a rich, warm, full, somewhat tannic and tight palate with good sweetness, but not cloying. A warm palate with, with espresso, black liquorice, spicy, black tea, fig, blackberry, prune and menthol flavours. Impressive with lots of intensity and a warm finish, needs another 5 to 7 years to fully mature." Anthony Gismondi Wine Access

BEST FORTIFIED WINE
DECANTER, DECEMBER 2008
"The port winemaking overseer at Fladgate, David Guimaraens' real passion is Quinta do Panascal - Fonseca's Vargellas. Deeply fruited, tobacco nose, with spice and grip. Lively and persistent, born of a consistently dry summer. A port for the next 10 years."
As well as Fonseca and Guimaraens Vintage Ports, blended from the wines of all three of its properties, the firm also offers rich, velvety single quinta Vintage Ports made entirely from the produce of Quinta do Panascal. These are a pure expression of the estate's terroir.
Like Guimaraens Vintage Ports, they are made in years producing softer more approachable wines which do not need to be cellared for a long time before being enjoyed.
Located on the steep right bank of the Távora River, Panascal is one of the most highly reputed vineyards in the Douro Valley. In the words of a local saying, 'From Roncão and Panascal come the finest wines of Portugal'.
Since its acquisition by the company in 1978 the estate has been the object of major investment intended, not only to bring new life to the vineyard, but to ensure that the estate produces outstanding wines which today form the backbone of the Fonseca Vintage Port blend.
The wines of Quinta do Panascal are rich, with voluptuous fruitiness, mouth filling density and a velvety texture.
