Croft Port, 1966

Vintage Port
Half Bottle 37.5cl

Description and Reviews:
The 1966 Croft Vintage Port is a distinguished example of mid-20th-century port craftsmanship from one of the oldest port houses, founded in 1588. The 1966 vintage is celebrated for its exceptional quality, with Croft's offering recognized for its depth, balance, and longevity. This vintage showcases a slightly deeper core and an elegant bouquet of mulberry, tobacco, and balsamic notes. On the palate, it presents flavors of wild strawberry, fig, and a touch of lemongrass, complemented by a silky texture and a well-integrated finish. It is often regarded as a "little gem" and superior to Croft's 1963 vintage.

Over the decades, the 1966 Croft Vintage Port has developed remarkable complexity, demonstrating the excellent aging potential of top vintage ports. Well-stored bottles still offer an enjoyable experience, with a harmonious balance and refined character. Proper storage conditions—cool temperatures and consistent humidity—are critical for preserving its quality, and careful decanting is recommended to remove sediment before serving.

As a rare and sought-after vintage, the 1966 Croft holds significant appeal for collectors and enthusiasts. Whether enjoyed as a centerpiece for a special occasion or added to a collection, this vintage remains a testament to Croft’s legacy and the enduring excellence of classic vintage ports.

Tasting Notes: A slightly deeper core compared to the ’63. The nose is very ripe with mulberry and tobacco with a hint of balsam, just lacking a little freshness and delineation. The palate is similar to the ’63, very well-balanced and cohesive, a slightly viscous texture, fresh and surfeit with joie-de-vivre and vivacity. Wild strawberry, lemongrass and fig towards the finish, this is certainly the “dark horse” of the decade and in my humble opinion, superior to the ’63. A little gem. Tasted November 2007.
