Special Edition 1974 Colheita Port *** 93 Points - Wine Advocate ***
Silver Medal Decanter 2022
Description and Reviews:
The 1974 Barros colheita is a very elegant fifty year old port that was bottled to celebrate the historic Carnation revolution of 1974 when Portugal progressed from dictatorship to democracy with almost no shots being fired. The revolutionaries offered carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate.
Tasting Notes Rich, complex blend of deep amber and reddish hues, with notes of dried fruits, toasted nuts, caramel, toffee, spice, and wood. Its palate is smooth and well-balanced, with a full-bodied texture and a balance of sweetness and acidity. The finish is long and satisfying with lingering notes of dried fruit, nuts, and a hint of spice.
Serving & Food Pairing: Colheita Ports are ready-to drink and do not require decanting. Best enjoyed slightly chilled at 12-13ºC they will work wonders if pairing with treacle tart, crème brulee or nut based desserts, like hazelnut praline. Once opened colheita Port should be stored in a fridge and should be consumed within 3 months.
Barros, a renowned Portuguese port wine producer, was established in 1913 by the Barros family. Founded by brothers Antonio and João Barros, they initially sold port wines in Vila Nova de Gaia. Barros is known for its extensive range of port styles, including Ruby Ports, Tawny Ports, and Colheitas, particularly high-quality Colheita Ports. The company emphasizes traditional port wine-making methods, including extended aging in wooden casks, to develop complex flavours.
How to store your colheita Port: This bottle should be kept upright and protected from direct sunlight and heat. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine.
