Nearly 150 years old, this full-bodied Madeira has not lost any of its power and complexity. This is a rare limited release of the 1875 Madeira from the “Barbeito Family Collection”. This is one of several vintages coming from Ricardo Freitas’s mother and grandfather’s reserves and usually spend a significant amount of time in demi-john.

Neil Martin Writes of this wine "The 1875 Malvasia has a dark amber/brown color. The bouquet opens aroma by aroma: honey, peppermint, juniper berries and quince. It is a glorious, life-affirming bouquet. The palate is beautifully balanced with vibrant acidity that is entwined with notes of molasses, honey, quince and Lapsang Souchong. It is very refined and focused with a long, sensual finish that never relinquishes its sense of tension and vibrancy." Score 96/100


Barbeito Madeira is a renowned producer of Madeira wine, which is a fortified wine from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Established in 1946, Barbeito is one of the few independent, family-owned producers of Madeira. Mario Barbeito founded his company in what was a dark time for Madeira with many companies going out of business. He had faith in the future. He also believed—just as Charles Ridpath Blandy, H.M. Borges and João D’Oliveira had done decades earlier—that the value of great Madeira could only go up as it became older, and production of young vintages declined. And so, a former accountant, Barbeito went around the island buying substantial stocks of priceless old vintages from important families. This bottle represents one of thos acquisitions.
